There is always hope

God loves you.

One of Jesus’ most infamous parables was the story of the lost son. Jesus tells of the youngest of two sons who chose to demand his family’s inheritance early. He took the money and ran to a far off land. Spending his money and life on gratifying his every desire only to find out it left him empty and void. In a moment of desperation the son remembers his home. He remembers how life in his father’s house was joyful, peaceful, and abundant. He embraces a new idea: “If only I returned home and worked as a servant in my father’s house. That would be a better life than the one I’m living.” So, he starts the long journey home. Jesus’ story takes an interesting twist. Despite the sons’ premonition to return home and do the longest walk of shame in his life, he quickly realizes it he had it all wrong. The father is running the long path to meet his son! He isn’t hesitating at all. He throws his arms round his son and welcomes him home. Instead of anger, love. Instead of fear, peace. Instead of shame, forgiveness. The father is overjoyed that his son has returned home. He is smiling from ear to ear. Ecstatic! Full of laughter. He calls for a party. In a shocking display of generosity - despite all his son’s regret, the shame he brought upon his family, and the reckless spending, the father gives his son a new robe, a ring, and fresh set of sandals. THIS! This is what Jesus says our Heavenly Father is like. He longs to welcome us home! He longs to give us a new identity as his beloved daughter or son. Through Jesus Christ, God has given us relationship with Him. We can live loved, full of hope, and at peace with God and those around us.

“The father will always welcome you home. No matter how far you’ve run, distant you feel, shame you carry, things you’ve done, grace will meet you where you are. HEAD TOWARDS HOME.” Jon Tyson
